Creating Innovation Zone Communities across NV
In the spring of 2019 we were working to catalyze the creation of Innovation Zone Communities across Nevada that would serve as our collaborative research and development sites for the above Future-of- Learning Labs. We've begun to build the dialogue among several of these hubs of innovative leaders, practitioners, and community members who are already leading the way to re-imagining education to empower every learner, from cradle to career, to realize their full personal potential and contribution to society.
We conceived the Innovation Zone Communities program just before the 2019 legislative session in hopes of having it considered as a Resolution. We believe it is the best way to catalyze systemic innovation across our state by getting all legislators aware and on board with creating the systemic policy shifts that we'll need to make Innovation Zones with Learning Lab Centers successful. The key policy shift is to replace credit earning by seat time in subject courses with individualized student progression based on competency and capacity demonstration.
The Innovation Zone concept is rapidly catching on across the US because major change is most successful when early-adopter change leaders first demonstrate the innovations - creating proof points - which then help to disseminate the best practices to other schools and districts.
Our emerging IZC program for Nevada is unique in that it proposes to involve whole P-20+ communities from pre-kindergarten through higher education and lifelong learning in schools, community learning lab centers and workplaces.
Some Innovation Zone Communities are already emerging - beginning to design, develop and demonstrate successful practices for what we call learner-powered ecosystems. In this community-engaged personalized learning system, every student, regardless of their background or address, is empowered to flourish and thrive to their developmental potential and personal goals in ways that richly benefit their families, communities, state and country.

Our Challenge & Opportunity
Nevada aspires to be a hub for world-class innovative business.
We need all graduates prepared to deliver the vision.
The Education Innovation Collaborative (EIC) is an organization designed to catalyze community engagement to support ALL schools and educators to prepare ALL students for 21st century life, college, and occupations in Nevada.
TO UNLEASH THE LEARNING POTENTIAL AND CREATIVITY OF STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, SCHOOLS, AND THE COMMUNITY -
ENABLING ALL YOUNG PEOPLE TO BUILD THEIR PERSONAL VISIONS,
ENGAGE WITH THEIR COMMUNITY,
AND LEAD THE CHANGE TO A BETTER WORLD.
With diverse team members from education, business, technology, social services, community-building, and transformative learning and change, we seek to help the NV system of education - including district and charter public schools - to be part of a dynamic 21st century deep learning eco-system.
Our three-prong plan is to facilitate community-wide Action Research processes involving
Collaborative Learning & Planning
Advocating for Students & Systemic Change
In the EIC History tab above, view the XQ Super School grant proposal that earned semi-finalist status in the XQ Institute's Challenge in 2016.
In the HOW INNOVATE tab, see our proposed design for an edPORTAL that will enable collaboration among innovators and community advocacy for students and systemic change through Innovation Zone Communities who are developing and implementing personalized Learner-Powered Ecosystems - which will empower innovative teaching and learning in schools across Nevada. The edPORTAL design aims to enable the cycles of actions described above:
collaborating to develop next generation practices (research and planning), incubating innovation, and advocating for systemic change.
In Phase 1, we are working to develop and support a Collaborative Learning Nevada (CLN) networking platform to nurture innovative program success in and among pilot schools. The CL Network aims to include and support innovators across existing and future programs in K-12 schools including Nevada Ready 21, Competency-Based Education Pilot Network, Summit Learning Platform users, STEM Academies,CTE programs, and charter schools.
If you are an educator, school leader, counselor or education resource provider from any of the above who is interested to learn more about participating in the CLN, we'd love to hear from you!
