Technology-enabled Learning for Future Ready Skills
The education industry has been lagging all others in applying technological innovation to improving the quality and efficiency of the system and outputs. In our case, information, communications and computing technologies have huge potential to improve the learning experience for all students - in a far more equitable way than today's pen and paper system can.
With prices continuously decreasing and device access continually increasing, technologies can transform how teaching and learning happens at every step of the way. This World Economic Forum (WEF) research report on The New Vision for Education; Unlocking the Potential of Technology describes all these impacts from technology integration in schools, districts, and states to transform education system effectiveness and efficiency.
The WEF has also conducted important research on How Education Technology can help Foster Social and Emotional Skills. We need not fear that technologies are negatively impacting our student's brains or socialization skills (from addictions to social media and gaming) IF we effectively design student-centered learning environments that use technologies to create more engaging and effective learning experiences - including challenging student-choice projects and investigations that involve deep collaboration with teachers, peers, experts, and community members.
The Alliance for Excellent Education sponsors programs that facilitate districts and states with the transition to preparing all students for their information and Digital Age future through the Future Ready Schools initiative.
From the Future Ready Website:
Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It emphasizes high-quality instruction and provides access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career. Digital learning encompasses many different facets, tools, and applications to support and empower teachers and students, including online courses, blended or hybrid learning, or digital content and resources.
Future Ready Schools® (FRS) is a bold effort to maximize digital learning opportunities and help school districts move quickly toward preparing students for success in college, a career, and citizenship. FRS provides districts with free resources and support to ensure that digital learning plans align with instructional best practices, are implemented by highly trained teachers, and lead to personalized learning experiences for all students, particularly those from traditionally underserved communities.
FRS resources are open to leadership teams from school districts where the superintendent has signed the Future Ready District Pledge—a commitment to implement meaningful changes toward a digital learning transition that supports teachers and addresses the district’s vision for student learning. After committing to the pledge, districts receive free access to summits, workshops, a planning framework and interactive planning tools, vast and deep resources, and ongoing professional learning opportunities through virtual events, mentoring, and regional networking.
The Alliance for Excellent Education is leading this effort with the support of a vast coalition of more than sixty national and regional organizations. In addition to FRS, the Alliance also leads Digital Learning Day, an annual nationwide celebration that the Alliance created in 2012 to highlight great teaching and demonstrate how technology can improve student outcomes. In this research report, Bringing in Technology, we see how parents are increasingly valuing technology use in and beyond classrooms while also having healthy concerns for the risks. (Joan Ganz Cooney Center; advancing student learning in the digital age)
